Coronavirus: the business winners and losers during March 2020

The Jobs Barometer recorded 129,558 job movements across the private, public and not-for-profit sectors in the UK during March 2020. These comprised 86,407 gains and 43,151 losses in a 67%/33% split.

In the private sector (see data tables below) retailing topped the job gains chart (accounting for 48.3% of the total gains) and also topped the job losses table (making up 39.2% of the total). Firms which had been teetering on the brink of collapse before COVID-19 struck soon slipped under, while others – such as supermarkets and other ‘essential’ retail businesses – launched hiring initiatives to service the changing demands of the marketplace brought on by restrictions and infection fears.

The Government’s furloughing initiative prevented an avalanche of job losses in retail and elsewhere, for now at least – otherwise the Jobs Barometer would be showing a very different picture.

Leisure & Hospitality was also heavily impacted in March by the unfolding crisis, accounting for 36.5% of the job losses and 15.7% of the job gains, as businesses that could benefit from the stay-at-home and social-distancing restrictions did so.

At a regional level, firms in London accounted for 24.6% of the job gains, while the East of England made up 31.1% of the losses.
